I really never meant to write this. In fact i just kept my distance with regards to the issue of Vice Ganda and Jessica Soho.
Though I posted a number of reactions in my facebook page I just thought that perhaps it is just something that will pass away. Something that will be regarded as fleeting.
(Even though I found out later that Jessica Soho herself was a constant client of a comedy bar back in the 90′s)
But now Pol Medina Jr. got pulled out of PDI.
And for what? For poking fun out of the LGBT community? For making fun of the church? For making fun of a school? (St. Scholastica which incidentally is where my wife studied and my mother in law served as a teacher for 30 plus years) For making fun of the students of that school? just got pulled out of one of my favorite newspapers in the country.
Incidentally the strip was a re-issue according to Pol Medina himself, saying that it was re-issued after he steadily published anti-marcos strips. As such the strip itself was published last march with no particular reaction whatsoever. He calls it aptly a “consPIGracy”.
Then comes vice ganda’s “rape” jokes that for all we know were aimed for an audience in a comedy bar. Which by the way can even make fun of GOD or the President and get away with it.
And suddenly everyone is a holier than thou, claiming foul whereas the nature of comedy is such.
Comedy (from the Greek: κωμῳδία, kōmōidía), in the contemporary meaning of the term, is any discourse or work generally intended to be humorous or to amuse by inducing laughter, especially in theatre, television, film and stand-up comedy. This sense of the term must be carefully distinguished from its academic one, namely the comic theatre, whose Western origins are found in Ancient Greece. In the Athenian democracy, the public opinion of voters was influenced by the political satire performed by the comic poets at the theaters. The theatrical genre can be simply described as a dramatic performance which pits two societies against each other in an amusing agon or conflict. Northrop Frye famously depicted these two opposing sides as a “Society of Youth” and a “Society of the Old”, but this dichotomy is seldom described as an entirely satisfactory explanation. A later view characterizes the essential agon of comedy as a struggle between a relatively powerless youth and the societal conventions that pose obstacles to his hopes. In this struggle, the youth is understood to be constrained by his lack of social authority, and is left with little choice but to take recourse in ruses which engender very dramatic irony which provokes laughter.
Satire and political satire use ironic comedy to portray persons or social institutions as ridiculous or corrupt, thus alienating their audience from the object of humor. Satire is a type of comedy. Parody subverts popular genres and forms, using certain ironic changes to critique those forms from within (though not necessarily in a condemning way). Screwball comedy derives its humor largely from bizarre, surprising (and improbable) situations or characters. Black comedy is defined by dark humor that makes light of so-called dark or evil elements in human nature. Similarly scatological humor, sexual humor, and race humor create comedy by violating social conventions or taboos in comic ways. A comedy of manners typically takes as its subject a particular part of society (usually upper class society) and uses humor to parody or satirize the behavior and mannerisms of its members. Romantic comedy is a popular genre that depicts burgeoning romance in humorous terms and focuses on the foibles of those who are falling in love.
Yes I posted the entire thing just to give you an idea of the whole meaning of it. And the way I see it Pol Medina just employed satiric comedy which he is a genius of.
But of course not everyone has the same level of comedy that one can accept.
The show Family Guy are one of those where it takes a certain level of understanding and grit to realize the humor behind it.
But that is what freedom is, it goes deep to the level of humor one can accept. It reflects the kind of society a person lives in.
It is also ironically funny how we can accept green jokes left and right but we don’t condone any reference to gender to poke fun at people.
It would seem the only people that can make fun of themselves are the ones being made fun of.
Only a gay person can make fun of another gay person the same with religion and so on.
At the end of the day humorists are artists, and censoring their art is one way of curtailing their freedom. The next thing we know we are censuring the web, the writers, the intellectuals.
And we all know that when that happens a lot of bad things come our way.
