Who is Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro? And why was he chosen over Bayani “BF” Fernando by the administration?
In asking this question we must consider three point of views:
1. The simple man (Mass or Masa)
2. The socially aware man. (Politicized)
3. The skeptic man (Me)
The Mass – Which composes of the majority of Filipinos on my observation is overly agreeable to the macho image of a candidate. Take for example the previous election between Fidel V. Ramos and Miriam Defensor Santiago. Fidel Ramos won and I think he won not because of the lack of skill of Miriam but because Filipinos look at soldiers as people of great importance, thats why a lot of candidates who came from the military usually wins because the mass thinks highly of this institution no matter how corrupt and wrought of injustices the intitution is.
I think the administration picked Gibo because of this strength, Gibo enjoys the full support of the military other than the fact that he’s good looking thus the macho image he exemplifies that makes him admirable to the simple man.
The Politicized – If you ask a politicized person who Gibo is chances are he would look you in the eye and ask you about the person, we know nothing of Gibo ass much as we know how many times GMA went out out of the country and dined over a million pesos save for now which is the same situation Gibo is. Gibo can only boast of his education and some decision making in the house of representatives, his stint as a defense minister and avid supporter of the visiting forces agreement, but other than that he has nothing to offer the simple man or had nothing solidly contributed to their welfare save the spoiling of the military. So if you ask a politicized man he’d probably wave the question off and do other important things.
Me - I know I know this is redundant because its just me writing all along, either way let us indulge nonetheless in the question of Gibo. Why do i think he stands a chance in this upcoming election? One of his most disarming charisma is the idea of a new blood in politics, the fact that he’s a harvard and U.P. Law graduate and came from an elite family already gains the support of the upper classes and the academic. These people might dwell on speculations brought about by his academic achievements which nonetheless were already proven wrong by the past presidents Marcos and GMA. Dwelling in speculation and what could’ve beens is a very dangerous thing to do, EDSA 2 and the victory of Erap are clear examples of this very dangerous mindset. For not only does it gives a person good reason to do a mindless thing it also pulls out the support of the thinking highly-influential majority to act unitedly in hopes that given a persons academic background and social status he would look out for the common good which I highly disagree.
So you see the reason is very simple Gibo was chosen over BF because of winnability and never because of achievements which BF has achieved exemplary results over Gibo’s null.
