After 11 years I was able to go back to U.P. Cebu College and as I was traipsing around the campus a lot of changes got my attention albeit some of them positive nonetheless a lot of them negative.
One of the most alarming things I noticed is the dwindling number of students in the campus, one of the major reasons I can come up with is the astronomical rise of tuition in the University, as compared before to the 200 pesos per unit it is now a stunning 1000 pesos per unit. Another bothering thing that I noticed after talking with some of the faculty is that regardless of the rise in tuition there is no difference in the amount of compensation a professor could get. To note a good professor friend of mine had to wait ten years to even have a raise in salary.
When I was studying in U.P. Cebu a lot of kids belong to the lower class while some stories as eating root crops and salt as an everyday meal was almost heart rending to say the least extremely pitiful I now wonder what happened to those kids who can’t afford to pay a 1000 peso per unit subject in U.P. what would happen to them and where will they end up?
One of the major reasons why the University of the Philippines decided to raise its tuition is because using the funds it is getting from the government it cannot stand on its own, in fact it has been functioning in the debit end of its bargain. The government having placed a deaf ear towards its hungry citizenry of course wouldn’t bother hearing the demands of a state university that is sanctioned by the government to produce top students even under the protection of the constitution working under a meagre budget .
So it came to the point when the university has to cannibalize its own studentry to be able to survive this demand from an inept government. Now the next question remains, What’s next? Where do we place our students and educators in the map of the poor and the downtrodden? Should we place them alongside the potential criminals who has no other choice but to take advantage of their positions to be able to feed their families?
Where shall we find educators if they themselves are looking outside for hope in rising out of poverty? Is this what U.P. education is all about?
