It was said that this song was Ninoy’s favorite song, but what would he have said if he lived a life after Marcos’ departure?
Just recently 10 of the suspects for his assassination were released because of a Presidential pardon granted by one of the most hated presidents to ever sit in office. Yeah you know who I am talking about it is Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. And as if underhandedly giving a statement after the former President Cory Aquino had been critical of GMA’s regime it is as if saying “go ahead criticize me more, I just freed your husbands’ slayers anyway”. In a nutshell the suspects release by virtue of a presidential pardon just clearly smacks of politicking heres’ why.
1. Ninoy was killed in broad daylight in a most heinous act of impunity while being escorted by guards armed with machine guns numbering to hundreds from in and out of the airport when he landed in Manila and yet no security guard was able to pinpoint exactly who shot Ninoy Aquino while the trajectory in fact was from the back of his head exiting to his lower jaw meaning the bullet came from a short range weapon and from an angle at the back of Ninoy while he was goin down the stairs.
2. Even after further investigation the suspects never directly pinpointed who exactly was the mastermind in the murder. While it is most alarming to say that their stay in their prison cells cost them their health some even surviving four strokes at a time it is not ironicaly healthy that they were treated badly I would say their health deteriorated because of the poor situation of our prisons not to mention the poor maintenance and food distribution in our penal system.
3. While it is prudent that the President has direct power to uphold pardons “due to their good conducts” while in prison her decision is still suspect given the case being a high profile in itself. I still believe the reason they were placed in prison was to be able to point who the real person is who ordered Ninoy’s killing and not because they are to be released afterwards just because they “behaved” well (yes they behaved alright they didn’t tell anyone who really killed Ninoy ergo their good conducts).
Call me bitter but releasing the prisoners on the eve of Ninoy’s birthday is not just plain insulting for the hero but plain outright debauchery to the spirit of the martyr.
It is also notable to say that the prisoners still stand by their story that Rolando Galman killed the senator while in fact scientific evidence states otherwise making it more suspicious given the fact that the wife of Rolando Galman was herself liquidated by the military after the assasination of Ninoy.
I say give them food, give them shelter, give them medicine they deserve that and I dont mind them being around 70 its natural to age anyway. If they killed a hero they killed a hero and they deserve to rot in prison, not until they admit to their crimes and point out who the real mastermind was in Ninoy’s slaying so that justice may truly be served.
