Francis Durango Magalona
(October 4, 1964 – March 6, 2009)
He will be remembered as the one who inspired Filipinos to be proud of who they are. His passing came as a shock to all of us as his cancer was diagnosed only last year If I’m not mistaken. And he was also undergoing treatment at the time before he passed away.
Unknown to many I’ve known Francis since High School as his brother in law was a good friend of mine but unfortunately we haven’t met face to face. I was only able to know him when we play with his kids in the village where they once stayed back in Marikina.
My friend said that he’s acutely intelligent and would talk about the books he just read. he would compose his music and lyrics as if its second nature to him. But what I like most about him is his sense of national pride. His seeming nationalistic pleasure of ingraining the good and the greatness of the Filipino.
if there’s one thing I really admire about him it is how he was able to create music that would make us as a nation proud of who we are. He even used recyled paper in his albums to promote global awareness. I used to listen to his albums when I was an adolescent and one of my friends even used the lyrics to “Mga Kababayan” (My countrymen) in our class speeches.
In later years he would create shirts with pictures of our country and strong symbols from our flag. Being a nationalist myself I salute him for what he did unknown to anyone I’ve been planning that myself but due to lack of funds and time it didn’t push thru.
Wherever you are bro take care always and you have my heartfelt gratitude thank you for sharing your music with us.
Rest in peace bro and God Bless You…
