The term EMO is derived from its root word Emotion whereas it became the overcoming trend nowadays with the youth. The usual get-up would be as follows:
A disheveled hair usually with some long bangs on the front and standing hair strands at the back either with the use of a styling gel or hair wax), all black apparel for men and women, tons and tons of eyeliner, an appaling almost seemingly defeated look and a downward turning of the head towards left or right or front, black lipstick, black gloves, and a huge black handkerchief on the neck and their black skateboards.
Apparently the youth of today found a voice in this get-up that its as if the only way to be in the “in” group is to be an EMO. Thus my acute observation of their genre or whatever you might call it.
In older times (I mean in my time, though I’m not that old yet) there were groups such as punks and metal-hardcore groups and the usual hip-hop people with their oversized shirts and oftentimes brandishing some serious criminal hatred for them hardcore rockers.
The kind of music the usual emo listens to or sing to are the type where there are long interval of screams as such they are even branded as “screamo” (a mixture of scream and emo). The bands dashboard confessional, typecast, My chemical romance, all american rejects, paramore are all within the confines of Emo.
I asked a lot of my batchmates in High School what they think of this Emo phenomenon and they tell me “Just wait and see all of these will pass and the punks and hip-hop people will return” or so it seems but I’ve asked that question four years ago already and the members of Emo groups are constantly growing and growing like the koreans living here in the Philippines (though that is another story).
It is weird when looking at it different generations have different ways of going against the norm either by dressing weirdly and listening to songs they believe expresses their emotional turmoils.
I am not against Emo in fact I encourage people to be Emo and if they feel like screaming and looking sad and wearing make-ups thats fine with me, as long as they don’t destroy anything in site and make their being Emo their justification. I may not like their music but I respect their right to listen to them and express themselves.
Mark this, the Emo generation will always remain and will always stick as a major influence of this generation.

I thought EMO music is those played by cueshe, sponge cola, etc. They are mostly rock groups played by boy bands and the theme of their music usually revolves around relationship hence called emo for “emotional”.
The one you described (“all black apparel for men and women, tons and tons of eyeliner”) is similar to groups who call themeselves “gothic”.
hahaha gothic people are the ones who have white skin and fills their faces with white powder that they look like zombies walking around, they also trim their eyebrows. Cueshe and spongecolas are great bands according to the likes of Emo’s too hahaha so we can agree on that one! Thanks for visiting my site!
