Let them suffer.
Let them realize their mistake.
We’ve done enough and enough is enough, its’ about time to think for ourselves.
To let themselves wake up from their stupor.
To let them get the best of what they deemed best.
They dare overlook the law for conformity then so be it.
It just furthers the idea that there really is no law to follow.
That the law can be overstepped for the sake of “their” greater good.
Makes you ask yourself: Why bother having elections when people cheat anyway?
Or why bother setting up rules and regulations on prohibiting presidents talking with commissioners in elections only to be found out later that the President did contact “Garci” but can’t be held accountable.
Or why bother complaining when people can’t even walk the streets to voice out their opinions?
When lives of activists are falling left and right and nobody dare raise their fists against impunity.
They say because there’s no better leader to replace her.
They say because activists are taking advantage of their freedom just to topple the government in the end, for they are communists. (without considering the ones who aren’t)
They say because they bother traffic and congests it making it troublesome for commuters and motorists.
And most of all they say it’s because everybody’s corrupt so why bother making it anyones’ problem, just do your job and get on with your life.
In my 28 years of existence I realized the following:
1. Money is power (forget everything but earn money, more money and you’re okay)
2. Corruption is a part of everyday life and can be a part of Filipino Values.
3. There is no such thing as a peaceful revolution only the revolution of the minds and the stomach.
4. That Filipinos are conditioned to be acquiescent and illiterate to be taken advantage of.
5. That the (catholic) church will make this country over populated by 2020.
6. That the media feeds off from the ignorance of the masses instead of empowering them.
7. That the government has no plans on saving the environment instead offers it to other countries for consumption.
8. Quality Education is an enterprise for the ones who can afford it and never a right.
9. Womens and third sex rights are never empowered in the country.
10. Health is never the highest priority of the government.
But alas there are those who persevere. Who won’t let go of their dreams of a better future. Who continues to fight and follow the “impossible dream”.
I’ve known a few, from teachers in public schools, to missionaries, to student activists and organizers to social workers to writers.
They are those rare few who like the 12 disciples of christ went out to be persecuted for the sake of what is right and ought to be changed in the country.
Some embraced the system defeated or perhaps realistically driven to recognize the utter insanity of dying for their ideals, some who deemed life is far better than being a martyr to an ideal which will never be realized.
They don’t want to be called heroes if only to be forgotten.
I’ve known heroes, emulated them and offered them a toast or two at nights of nostalgia. Afterwards hoping that they were still with us, and the reality that the end of a life means the end of a struggle.
There’s a time when you have to give the opponent the ball and give them the court too.
To bow down graciously, sit down and watch them play the game themselves.
They will grow tired eventually or if not you can create your own team go to another place and play another game.
