“People don’t buy from clowns.” – Claude C. Hopkins
Looks like it took awhile for me before writing something about SEO.
But anyway going back to our show let me tell you about SEO in its context.
SEO is not just basically link-building and content-building.
SEO is also about marketing and advertising your website. And Claude Hopkins was able to create a formula for effective Advertising which he dubbed as Scientific Advertising.
The following were the highlights of his theory:
1. Customers like to be courted.
2. They expect to be appreciated – treated as special beings because, in their mind, they are special.
3. They like to be assured – they want YOU to take the risk. They want 100% guarantee!
4. Customers buy benefits, not features. (Remember the infomercial “But wait, there’s more!” spiel?)
5. They are influenced by endorsements – they’re looking to hear the opinions of people they trust and respect. (Testimonials people! Just think about an endorsement from a celebrity)
6. Once they’re looking to buy, customers respond to headlines. They want to hear the whole story and they don’t mind spending the time it takes to hear it all – but, they will not tolerate being bored! (This is very applicable with your website, If the customer cannot find the thing they are looking for and if your site is well-boring chances are they will fly away)
7. They are turned off by negative advertising. (even when you think your product is better than others don’t start a fight. chances are it always gets back at you.)
8. The right name can make or break a sales campaign. (imagine giving your child the name of a japanese demon like “akuma” and going to japan, if you get my drift.)
9. Most importantly, what works and what does not is always determined by testing – not guessing, not opinion. Testing. (Now this is a lengthy thing to discuss, its just like saying how much you should bank on research before really putting up a website, I don;’t need to expound it further but just imagine cooking something without tasting it and serving it to your guests.)
So before you go on optimizing your site try to look at the list and see if you are doing well on them.
Cheers!
