“You are not a human being in search of a spiritual experience. You are a spiritual being immersed in a human experience.” – Teilhard de Chardin
Last night I had another interesting conversation with regards to the priest dilemma.
This time she said that being a priest I must and should respect the sanctity of the confession and must not tell of the “crime” regardless of its nature.
She said: It is like a lawyer and client relationship saying that a lawyer can never implicate its client even though the lawyer already has the knowledge of the admittance of guilt from the client. It is a contract between a client and a lawyer and something that the courts would also adhere to.
I couldn’t agree more. And perhaps given that argument I would think twice in becoming a lawyer.
Yet there is something amiss in her argument.
The role of a lawyer and a priest are completely different.
The priest upholds morality and spirituality, while a lawyer upholds the well being of his client and prove his innocence.
But anyway I’d have to search more on this.
I texted my favorite philosophy professor back in college who happened to be a former seminarian and he told me to read the book: “The Priest, The Woman and The Confessional” by Fr. Chiniquy, S.J.
Hmm… I wonder where I can buy that book seems really interesting…
