“Keep your own house and its surroundings pure and clean. This hygiene will keep you healthy and benefit your worldly life.” – Sri Sathya Sai Baba
1. 70% Isopropyl Alcohol – yes get lots of it and use it after each practice of BJJ, it kills the bacteria and fungi accumulated from sweating and rolling on the mats.
2. Sulfur Soap - Use sulfur soap when taking a bath right after practice, it is recommendable that you take a bath right after practice as your pores are still open because of bode heat and sweat. So instead of keeping those germs locked in and having a bad case of staph might as well take my advice and take a bath ASAP. And by the way remember to clean your toes and hands you never know what kind of bacteria is already starting to develop there.
3. A Good Bath Soap – Other than sulfur soap you should also use another bath soap just to keep it more safer. just think of it as a second helping of cleaning for you body (thats how paranoid I am) but really it does makes sense once you get to experience having ichy toes and fungi filled fingers and a really nasty scalp you don’t want me to go on don’t you?
4. Invest in a powerful detergent – It is very Important to use a powerful detergent for your BJJ uniforms. You see BJJ uniforms have lots of small spaces and its really darn thick so there’s lots of places where bacterias and fungi’s can relax themselves. having a powerful detergent and soaking the uniform in it for a long time doesn’t just kill the germs but will help also thoroughly clean your uniform inside out and kill the very unwelcome smell too.
5. Use white vinegar – A cup of white vinegar when added to the last washing of your BJJ uniform as well as the first soaking of it in water before the actual washing would help take out more germs, and take the yellow off the armpits where most of your deodorant/perspiration piles up. It also helps freshen the uniform and remove lint.
6. Use Anti-fungi creams – Now there are lots of creams in the market and at the first instance that you feel that theres an itchy part on your body better place it with some anti-fungi cream. Tioconazole (Trosyd) works best for me.
7. Use the sun – The sun is still the best bacteria killer there is so when you think you have to use you BJJ uniform twice (I think using your uniform twice before washing it is fair enough) always remember to hang it and have the sun dry it up.
8. Cut your nails – Its just not helpful for you and your partner, it also takes out the possibility of you having to take home some dead skin from your sparring partner plus thousands of bacteria from the mat.
9. Keep your hair busy - if you have a long hair you might as well want to keep it short. Studies have shown that one of the dirtiest part of the boy is the head and yes your hair could pick up sweat and dust just like a mop on a sweaty mat. So cut it or better yet refer to number 2 and 3 unless you have a better shampoo.
10. Wash your protectors often - You have a groin cup? You have a bra supporter? Then wash it often. The sweatier you get the more sweat accumulates on your private parts. You don’t want to have them fungi’s on them when you are on the mood right?
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is fun like all other contact sports but I think aside from wrestling and judo it is a sport where lots of body sweat exchanges occur and thinking about you never know where your sparring partner came from before you play with him/her.
I played with an American in a BJJ tournament in Pan Asia and he smells like hell.
I was screaming and shouting in the middle of the game “IT STINKS, IT STINKS” then I tapped out.
He won.
The feeling is bad but being embraced by someone smelling of rotting fish is no ordinary experience.
I hope you take my advice to heart.
And by the way women like clean men. *wink* *wink*
I also practice Brazilian Jiu-jitsu so just in case you’re interested just contact me.
