Last sunday I was watching the mass at La Salle Greenhills in support of Jun Lozada. And as I was listening to the sermon of the priest I thought perhaps we are on the verge of a moral breakdown thats why we need such people to stir up our conscience.
The priest lambasted the government of GMA and shouted support for Lozada. “Well, I thought it was a mass for Lozada isn’t it? It is just typical that they will even dance for him if they want to” the cynic in me said.
Then Lozada took the stand and in his timid voice He asked “Is this the kind of society we’d like our children to grow up in? Where the people in power are evil and we do good things in secret instead of showing our good deeds to everyone?”
“That statement did it” I said to myself, perhaps that’s what we need to wake people up. But honestly I have half a mind to tell everyone that this protest against the government at this time will not prosper.
For one I doubt if the middle-class have support from the military or vice-versa, other than the eventual demise between the haves and the have-nots notwithstanding the experience that was EDSA 3.
As I see it that experience have created more than enough rift as it turned out after a number of scandals rocked the Arroyo regime and only a handful of the supposed masses belonging to the lower class really showed their support vis-a-vis EDSA 3.
I have a gut feeling that as long as former President Joseph Estrada keeps his mum his representatives will also hold their line.
This is the dilemma the current protesters have to look forward to, not to mention the inability of the massive left to work together and consolidate their forces in comparison to EDSA 1 where the conservatives and the radicals were able to if not work surreptitiously.
Another is the question of time, its still going to be only another two years before the next election comes and no well meaning senator or member of the opposition is more than willing to stake their candidacy just in case the NBN-ZTE controversy dies down just like the Gloriagate scandal.
Furthermore the lack of foresight on the part of the protesters, their agendas and alternative platform for a more effective government has never been put to light in the context of the controversy.
Such questions as “What happens next after GMA resigns? What happens to her cohorts and cabinet? What happens to those congressmen who time and again supported her all the way? What happens if Noli De Castro holds office? Is there going to be any snap elections? What about the generals who supported GMA and even provided assistance in rigging the elections?” Such questions are put to light and not a single one has been addressed so far.
But above all the ultimate question should be “Will the church continue its campaign of Morality and would go to the ends of the country to gain support against the current government?”
