“Jun, you moderate their greed.” – Secretary Neri to Jun Lozada on the NBN-ZTE deal.
When I read about this statement by Lozada I can’t help but remember a conversation I once had with my friend.
This friend of mine which we shall name Tin and I had a heated debate on the capacity of the current government to govern its people that we began comparing the misgivings of one government to the other starting with the one deposed by the current regime.
Tin said: “Erap was tactless and other than being corrupt he was arrogantly corrupt. He was so arrogant that he even wags his corruption in front of his underlings. He wags his misdemeanors in front of his Military Generals… Imagine, he was supposed to attend a military parade to inspect the troops and he comes in a few hours because he was dead drunk the night before and he was complaining of a hang-over… they lost respect for Erap bringing him his own downfall. GMA inspite of her corruption she was well meaning to hide them under the table to keep them from the publics scrutinizing eyes… She was well bred enough to keep her slimy hands inside her pockets while Erap was not.”
To which I replied: “And so because GMA is able-bodied to keep her dead in her closet and she’s really good at that you would still permit her to stay in power? Don’t you think we should be more careful of her because of that? We never know perhaps one day it’s your family’s carcass inside that closet as well as our country’s well being.”
I understand her point well. As if saying that being able to hide ones own evil is a skill or a taste of genius, or to vehemently proclaim justice and yet get away with ones own farce is considered gifted in the realm of politics.
The thing is moderation or not the capacity to do evil as light as it is or to keep evil as secretly as possible still doesn’t change the face of evil and eventually it will get back at you.
The way I see it Lozada’s evil was as plain as day for everyone to see and is comparable to De Venecias’ form of moderation.
Greed as to the Arroyo’s and Abalos is moderated according to Lozada by having to cut the commission in half thus paving way for the Filipinos to get a piece of the cake in this sense giving the Filipinos what they halfly deserve after having been preyed upon by the people on top, like vultures we are kept at a steady pace and when the people in power even wants to gnaw at the bones never leaving anything for Filipinos to even suck on, even threatening the hunter who helped fell down the prey to be eaten, that’s when the line gets drawn according to Lozada.
A white lie could be compared to their moderation of greed. A white lie serves as a stopper to prevent any further damage to the person being lied to and the person lying. It is to prevent further questions, prodding and responsibilities thus making it permissible only as far as its effectivity.
By cutting the commission in half Lozada offers no more intrigues and less of corruption. In chess one would call it having to sacrifice the pawn to acquire a stalemate.
But this is as far as one could handle when dealing with people in positions of power. No amount of sacrifice nor cutting in half would satiate the predators especially if it is in dollars.
Now the question is had it been approved (the commission being cut in half) and the project went underway would Lozada act differently?
If Lozada had even half of the commission will it also be considered as “moderated greed” or “Greed Controlled: Mission Success”? Would it add to his resume of doing something moderately right for the Filipinos?
Nonetheless given the current scenario we can also look at it that Lozada was placed at an un-interesting position at a very un-interesting time. He was tasked to be in the center of everything dirty and corrupt. That is more than enough to drive man to ask for divine providence. It is when having to look at your loved-ones as if its the last time you’ll see them makes one question ones frame of mind. And when one is pushed and shoved more than enough sometimes it is more prudent to confess than be eaten up by ones’ conscience (at least he still has one).
This is what I was saying about building monsters…
