We have one hero in our country that so far stands out the most over all other heroes.
His name is Jose Rizal.
Nonetheless I’ll leave it up to you to research more on him as I might not give justice to his memory.
But anyway I was also thinking as I came across the column of Conrado De Quiros in his book “Tongues on Fire” when he proposed that there should exist two heroes in our country to complement each other and in fact would be more precise in trying to articulate Philippine history to the younger generations. being Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio.
You see our contry is composed of small revolutions and long before the major revolution was headed by Andres Bonifacio and long before those revolutions were being committed one by one either through personal grudges or simply a problem of land and tax with the friars of that time.
There exists a deeper revolution between the evolution of the muslim society in the south.
their heroes unnamed mostly but rather the struggle of their culture towards a more dominating culture and an expanding one through commerce and education became more prevalent.
That fateful struggle exists even today.
But going back to my observation on having two heroes and why the importance of heroes comes to mind is because of the historical notoriety it presents to the future generations.
In the muslim area their heroes are protrayed as warrior like and ready to fight anytime and wage war and battle against all those who are thinking of putting an end to their culture.
Such icons does exists in the heroes of the christian people in the likes of Rizal and Bonifacio but perhaps the metaphysical side was never refined like for example the study of religion by the muslim south can never be matched as well as their premium on the morality of their leaders and priests.
Their interpretation of the divine encompasses even the human experience that it transcends judgment to the fundamental aspects of what is right and wrong according to the Qur’an and never subject to human judgment as opposed to the more sublime judicial structure of the Christians in the time of Rizal.
Citizens can plead their case and they have a constitution like basis, for their pleas given their justice system based on their religious beliefs.
Perhaps it is right to recommend two heroes in the sense that it is also true that they would complement each other.
But I can never think of a more suited hero to complement Rizal rather than a Muslim one.
Not that I don’t like Bonifacio but rather I believe that there exists two Philippines around that time and even today. It is divided by religious beliefs and culture.
A culture being oriented anew by the Christians and an older culture being revived by the muslims.
The problem is I don’t have any idea who it should be.
I guess I should research on it more.
